This certification program was designed for engineering technicians engaged in soil investigation and determination of engineering properties prior to and concurrent with initial construction activities. It recognizes, through its three subfields (Construction, Exploration, and Laboratory), situations in which the principal activities of the technician are concentrated in the construction site environment, the exploration operation, or the laboratory environment. The program also recognizes the situation in which the technician routinely has job tasks in all three subfield areas and this is considered a Generalist rather than a specialist. Areas covered include knowledge of standard soil classification tests; a specialized laboratory and field tests; construction practices; and record keeping and reports.
