The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Flight Engineer certification is a senior-level certification. Flight engineers, sometimes called second officers, are technical experts who are thoroughly familiar with the operation and function of various airplane components. The principal function of the flight engineer is to assist the pilots in the operation of the airplane. The Flight Engineer certification has six ratings: Flight Engineer Turbojet/Basic; Flight Engineer Turboprop/Basic; Flight Engineer Reciprocating Engine/Basic; Flight Engineer Turbojet; Flight Engineer Turboprop; and Flight Engineer Reciprocating Engine.
